Recreational  Program

Seymour Dance offers recreational classes for all levels and all age ranges. These classes focus on building technique, teamwork and learning choreography. We offer non-competitive classes in Jazz, Lyrical, Ballet, Tap, Acro, Hip Hop, Breakdancing and more!

 

This program is geared towards students looking to dance in a safe fun and engaging environment. There are no pre-requisites for the classes in this program, however if you are unsure what level or class will be the best fit, you are welcome to have your dancer attend a drop in class for an assessment by our teaching faculty.

  

Performances 

 

Our recreational dancers perform in one large-scale performance at our yearly June recital. This year our June Recital will be taking place on June 9th & 10th, 2019 at Centennial Theatre!

 

There are also additional opportunities to perform in our community which could include but are not limited to Holiday at the Shipyards, West Van Days and Blueridge Good Neighbour Day.

Ballet Classes

Ballet Open Gr 6+ (ages 12+)  (1hr)- A non syllabus class for students looking to expand their repertoire in Ballet. This class is strongly recommended for optimal results in Ballet. Must be in Ballet Grades 4-6. Class runs from September-June

 

Ballet Recreational (ages 8+) (1hr)
Ballet for fun, not geared towards an exam - Choreo from famous ballets, still eligible to be in all of our Ballet productions (Nutcracker & Year End Show Ballet)


 

Jazz Classes

This is a fast paced class that includes instruction in turns, jumps, flexibility, and choreography. The students do a warm up working on jazz technique, posture and coordination. Students can start jazz as young as age five and can continue on into festival competitions and performance jazz. Each teacher has their own unique combination of styles however the basic techniques are the same and can be applied to any style of Jazz.

Jazz 5/6 (1hr)-  Jazz for 5-6 year olds. Ballet is strongly recommended to take in conjunction with this class. Must be 5 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Jazz 7/8 (1hr)- Jazz for 7-8 year olds. Ballet is strongly recommended to take in conjunction with this class. Must be 7 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Jazz 9/10 (1hr)- Jazz for 9-10 year olds. Ballet or Lyrical are strongly recommended to take in conjunction with this class. Must be 9 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

 

Jazz 11/12 (1hr)- Jazz for 11-12 year olds. Must be 11 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Jazz Teen (1hr)- Jazz for teens 13 and up with previous experience . Must be 13 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Jazz Tech Open (1hr)- Jazz tech class for the Pre-Intermediate as well as students wishing to take a tech class and are over 10 years old. Must be 10 by December 31st. Class runs September-June. 

 

DRESS CODE:

All jazz students require tight fitting clothing such as a bodysuit, dance shorts or jazz pants, and black jazz shoes. Hair to be worn in a ponytail or bun.

 

 

Hip Hop Classes
Hip Hop is the current rage! These classes are tons of fun and great exercise. Students will get to dance to some of the latest music and learn exciting choreography. Hip Hop is similar to what you would see in music videos or with rap music. Each teacher has their own unique combination of styles.

Hip Hop 6/8 (1hr)- Hip Hop for 6-8 year olds. Must be 6 by December 31. Class runs September-June.  

Hip Hop 9/10 (1hr)- Hip Hop for 9-10 year olds. Must be 9 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Hip Hop 11/12 (1hr)-Hip Hop for 11-12 year olds. Must be 11 by December 31. Class runs September-June. 

Hip Hop Teen (1hr)- Hip Hop for ages 13 and up. Must be 13 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

DRESS CODE:
Sweat pants, leggings or shorts and a baggy T-Shirt or sweatshirt. CLEAN indoor running shoes. Hair must be tied back in a ponytail or a bun. 

 

Breaking Classes 

Breaking, also called breaking or b-boying/b-girling, is an athletic style of street dance. While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, breakdancing mainly consists of four kinds of movement: toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes. Breakdancing is typically set to hip-hop, funk, and breakbeat music, although modern trends allow for much wider varieties of music along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns.

Breaking Beginner (1hr)- An energetic and acrobatic style of street dancing for beginners. Must be 6 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Breaking Intermediate (1hr) -An energetic and acrobatic style of street dancing for those with previous breakdancing experience. Class runs from September-June.

DRESS CODE:
Sweat pants, leggings or shorts and a baggy T-Shirt or sweatshirt. CLEAN indoor running shoes. Hair must be tied back in a ponytail or a bun. 


 

Tap Classes 

Tap is designed to develop rhythm, style and sound.  Exercises focus on building articulation of feet and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. Students will learn a variety of tap steps, focusing on precision but also providing activities to foster creativity and expression. All tap classes perform in the June recital. ​

Tap Level 1 (1hr) - Beginner tap for ages 7* and up. Students will learn basic movements and musicality. Class runs from September-June.

 

Tap Level 2 (1hr) - Intermediate tap for ages 8 and up. For students with 1-2 years of tap experience. It can be beneficial to also enrolled in jazz or ballet for upper body technique. Class runs from September-June.


 

Tap Technique 12+ (1hr) - Advanced Tap techniques for students ages 10+. Tap class for students with 2+ years of tap experience. Class runs from September-June.

 

DRESS CODE:

Leggings, sweatpants or shorts with a T shirt, tank top or bodysuit. Tap shoes are required. Hair must be tied back in a ponytail or a bun. 

Broadway Bound Classes 

​Broadway Bound combines acting, singing and movement. Popular Broadway tunes and opening scenes are used. As dancers, this is a great class to take to become a “Triple Threat”. 

 

Broadway Bound 6-9 (1hr) - Musical Theatre class for ages 6-9. Students must be 6 by December 31st. Class runs from September - June. 

 

Broadway Bound 10+ (1hr) - Musical Theatre class for ages 10+. Students must be 10 by December 31st. Class runs from September - June.

Leggings, sweatpants or shorts with a T shirt, tank top or bodysuit. Tap shoes are required. Hair must be tied back in a ponytail or a bun. 


 

Stretch & MOMM (Method of Modern Movement Classes) 

Dancers work on increasing range of motion and flexibility. No Choreography. Classes run from September - June. 

* Each student is required to bring 2 yoga blocks of their own to each class.
 

Stretch (45min-1hr)- Class for all students to increase flexibility. For ages 7 and up. Must be 7 by December 31st. 

MOMM Level 1 (1hr)- Method of Modern Movement is a conditioning class that works through a flow of movements: where fitness meets the foundation of classical dance techniques. A full body workout that works on stability, flexibility, strength, endurance and technique.
Level 1: Ages 10+, students must have 3 years of dance experience

MOMM Level 2 (1hr)- Method of Modern Movement is a conditioning class that works through a flow of movements: where fitness meets the foundation of classical dance techniques. A full body workout that works on stability, flexibility, strength, endurance and technique.
Level 2: experience required, must have already taken MOMM Level 1

DRESS CODE:

Acro Classes

This dance form combines dance with gymnastics. Partner work, lifts, and acrobatic skills are the main focus. * Each student is required to bring 2 yoga blocks of their own to each class. Classes run from September - June. 

Acro Level 1 (1hr) - An introductory class with no previous acro experience required. Minimum age requirement is 6+ years.
 

Acro Level 2 (1hr)-  A class for students with 1+ year’s experience. Must be able to hold a headstand for 15 seconds, do a bridge with shoulders in line with wrists, and be flat in in at least one of their splits, hold a plank for 1 minute.

 

Acro Level 3 (1hr)- A class for students with 2+ year’s experience. Must be able to stand up from a bridge, do a limber and a back kickover and have 2 or more splits flat on the floor, hold a plank for 1 minute.

Acro Level 4 (1hr)- A class for students with 3+ year’s experience. Must be able to do a front and back walkover, forearm stand for 15 seconds, chest stand, hold plank for 2 minutes. 

 

Acro Level 5 (1hr) - Acro for students with 4+ years of experience. Class runs September-June and performs in our year end show. Class is for students ages 12+. Students must be 12 by December 31st. **enrolment after December 31st is not permitted.  


 

​DRESS CODE: 

Students require a bodysuit, dance shorts or jazz pants.  Bare feet. Hair must be tied back in a ponytail or bun.
 

Lyrical Classes

Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques.

Lyrical 6/9 (1hr)- Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques. Lyrical for 6-9 year olds with 0-1 years experience. Must be 6 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Lyrical 10/12 (1hr)- Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques. Lyrical for 10-12 year olds with 0-1 years experience. Must be 10 by December 31. Class runs September-June.

Lyrical Teen (1hr) - Lyrical dance is a style of dance created from the fusion of ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques. This class is for ages 13 and up with 0-1 years experience. Must be 13 by December 31st. Ballet is strongly recommended in conjunction with this class. Class runs September-June.

DRESS CODE:

All Lyrical students require a bodysuit, and dance shorts or jazz pants and beige/nude jazz shoeshair to be worn in a ponytail or bun.

 

Contemporary Classes

A free style of dancing that is not as restricted as classical ballet; movements are expressive of feelings, emotions and abstract ideas. We work on connection, improving, floor work and more.

 

Contemporary (1hr)- Contemporary dance incorporates versatility and improvisation with Ballet and Jazz elements. Must be 10 by December 31. Class runs September-June. 

 

DRESS CODE:

Students require a bodysuit, fitted shirt, dance shorts or jazz pants, and foot undies. Hair must be worn in a ponytail or bun.
