Our Story, Our Family

In the Summer of 2020, Seymour Dance changed ownership!

We are extremely proud and excited to announce to you all that Marissa, Lauren and Katie have gone in together to purchase Seymour Dance! It has been a long journey to get to this moment, but we finally made it and are so excited to celebrate with our dance family and community.

The three of us grew up together dancing at Seymour Dance from a very young age and had the benefit of learning to dance as one of Sonia Ellis’ dancers. We have always stayed close and throughout the years worked alongside Sonia in various capacities. She played an immense role in who each of us are today, and we feel privileged and inspired to continue her legacy and to continue providing our dance community with the nurturing, supportive and all-inclusive dance environment that so many call their second home!

For the past few years, we have been running the studio as acting managers on behalf of Sonia’s family and have learned just how much we belong here. As a team, we create high quality work and support each other to reach our full potential. We love our dancers, their families and the community that we have all built up together, and we look forward to continuing our momentum in the years to come. We want to say a heartfelt thank you to Sonia’s family for believing in us and giving us this opportunity.

You can still expect to receive the same treatment you love; we commit the same open communication, elite opportunities, love and support, and numerous ways to come together as a family and community to our students and families - we can only go up from here! Over the past few years we have faced countless challenging moments together and can truthfully say it has made us all stronger. Our valued staff are excited to be coming back and can’t wait to get you all dancing! We are ready to open up this Fall, and we are going to hit the ground running.

A message from Marylou Ellis, former Owner and Director, and the Ellis family,

The bittersweet moment has arrived to announce the change in ownership of Seymour Dance; the life long dream of my daughter Sonia.

Sonia dedicated her life to developing her dance studio to embrace a philosophy of inclusiveness and respect for every individual student’s needs and talents allowing them to thrive and develop a deep love for dance.
Thank you to everyone who showed their support to myself and my family during the challenges over the past several years. The kind, uplifting messages I received, speaking so highly of Sonia, helped me get through her passing.

My family extends our best wishes to the new owners, who have dedicated the last several years to continuing Sonia’s legacy. We feel confident that the students will continue to thrive under their direction. We trust that the teachers and parents will continue to provide the necessary support that made Seymour Dance such a great success.

For over 50 years, Seymour Dance in North Vancouver has been promoting the joy of dance in a caring environment, offering competitive and noncompetitive classes in Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip Hop, Modern, Musical Theatre, Tap, and Acrobatics. We care about the well being and development of every one of our students and treat them as part of our own dance family. We promote respect and camaraderie amongst dancers with their classmates and all the students at the studio to maintain a positive atmosphere.

Seymour Dance employs highly qualified, motivated instructors and creative choreographers who are valued for the mentoring of their dance students, love of dance, level of commitment, and for laying the stepping stones to build their self-confidence.

Dancers make use of the student lounge and desks to complete homework and enjoy a sense of belonging in Seymour Dance. Our four dance studios have Marley Dance flooring and two-way viewing mirrors so all classes can be observed any day of the week.

The school provides several performance opportunities including the annual production of “The Nutcracker” ballet, year end performances at Centennial Theatre, community performances, and competitions. Seymour dance was voted the best dance school on the North Shore by The Outlook readers in 2010, 2012, and 2013 and were voted one of the top three in 2011.The studio was voted top three studios in the North Shore News in 2011-2016.
